Do you miss a family lunch?

Online initiative of Lavrar o Mar wants to show how culture – and cultural spectacles – are alive, in times of extreme difficulties

Family lunches are of great importance in many cultures – and Portugal is no exception. It is in them that we often confess and “open our souls”. In these times of confinement, when we should not join the table, Lavrar o Mar did not “want to lose” its audience and created an online gastronomy laboratory, entitled “Cinematic family lunches”. The initiative takes place over two weekends (March 27th and 28th and April 3rd and 4th), will bring together cinema and gastronomy and everyone is invited to get your hands dirty.

The idea is not new, but Giacomo Scalisi and Madalena Victorino, programmers at Lavrar o Mar, really felt that «it was necessary to do something for those who follow us».

«In the first confinement, we tried to make Pasta e Basta, a show that has already taken place physically, but at home. As it went well now, with the return of confinement, we thought about continuing this experience», explains Giacomo, to Sul Informação.

Thus was born “Comer com os Olhos – O Cinema à Mesa”, an initiative that links the seventh art to gastronomy.

The first theme was “Erotica and cinematographic food”, with shows on the 12th, 13th, 19th and 20th of March, followed now by the “Cinematic family lunches”.

“Sometimes it's at family lunches, and I speak of family in the broadest sense, because they can also be friends, that everything happens. These are important, fundamental and explosive moments», highlights Giacomo Scalisi.

In this online lab, five films were chosen. “We are going to see some excerpts, interspersed with the preparation of the food, and we choose two dishes, which are made in two of the five films, for people to cook”, he explains.

Each one will be at home, but Zoom will become a real kitchen, supervised by chef Rosário Pinheiro.

And what dishes will be made? A tricolor risotto (which appears in the movie “Big Night”, by Campbell Scott and Stanley Tucci) and some chocolate truffles (from the movie “Chocolat”, by Lasse Hallstrom).

The other films that will also be seen – in short excerpts – are “Yin shi nan nu” (Eat, Drink, Man, Woman), by Ang Lee, “La Graine et Le Mulet (Couscous)”, by Abdel Kechiche, “The Hundred-Foot Journey by Lasse Hallström and “National Lampoon's Animal House” by John Landis.

Giacomo Scalisi emphasizes that the experience in these initiatives has been very positive. “We noticed that the public has a lot of fun. He likes cooking, watching movies and being anxious to know if the dish comes out or not», he says, between laughs.

Basically, this initiative wants to show how culture – and cultural spectacles – are alive in times of extreme difficulties. “We don't want to lose our audience. We can't meet, it's true, there are difficulties, but we really thought of a way to see each other, despite all the bad things we've experienced», stresses the programmer of “Lavrar o Mar”.

It's just that people really feel that “this is a way of getting together…even if it's through the Internet,” he adds.

For the time being it is not possible, but Giacomo Scalisi leaves a promise: "we can't, we want to do the show live".

Until then, if you want to participate in the online initiative, just send an email to [email protected] or call 913 943 034 to express interest.

After this contact and payment of the entry fee (3,5 euros), the list of ingredients for the menu and the access link for the desired session will be sent, which always starts at 11:00 am.
