It's official: Formula 1 Portugal GP on May 2nd at the Algarve Autodrome

Circuit in Portimão will host the third race of this year's F1 World Championship

“We are excited to announce that Formula 1 will be back in Portimão after the huge success of the race last year.” The words are from Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, published tonight in official website of the world race.

having announced in February the intention to fill the vacancy in the 1 F2021 calendar with a race in Portugal, Formula 1 confirmed last night, formally, that Portimão will host the Heineken Formula 1 Grand Prix of Portugal on May 2nd. It will be the third race of a World Championship that will have a record number of 23 races.

Last October, F1 returned to Portugal for the first time in 25 years, with an exciting Grand Prix that saw Lewis Hamilton Achieve 92nd Career Victory, ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen.

27.000 fans were on hand to enjoy the action, and Formula 1 is now working closely with the promoter and the Portuguese Government regarding the sport's fans this season.

Rita Marques, Secretary of State for Tourism, added that “the holding of major events in our country is very important for the image and international promotion of Portugal as a tourist destination, so it is with great interest that we witness the return of Formula 1 to the Algarve in 2021”.

“I want to thank the FIA ​​and F1 for the trust placed in Portugal, the Algarve and the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, in choosing our country to host a stage of the F1 calendar, and express our full commitment to make it big success", added the ruler.

The Algarve Tourism Region has already reacted to the ad, through a post on its Facebook page: «It is with great enthusiasm that Turismo do Algarve welcomes the return of Formula 1 to AAlgarve International Racetrack  in 2021, embracing the goal of making this great event a huge success for Portugal».

The Autodromo announced that, to complete the weekend, the International GT Open Championship will be joined as support races, which returns to the Algarve circuit after its last race in Portimão, in 2013 , and which comes with the Euroformula Open, which will make its debut in the Algarve.

To close a great racing program, there will also be the first race of the season of the Portugal Speed ​​Championship by Sport TV, the only Portuguese competition in the Formula 1 Grand Prix.
