The new bridge over Gilão, in the center of Tavira, opened to the public today, becoming yet another alternative for crossing the river, in this noble area of the city.

After more than a year of work, which cost around 1,47 million euros, and a lot of contestation, which led to a movement of citizens, the Tavira Semper, trying to stop the progress of the work, the new crossing is a reality.

“From this night on, the lighting of the new bridge over the River Gilão will be turned on. The delay in the certification and electric energy contract processes, which were dependent on external entities, conditioned its opening. But once this situation has been overcome, tomorrow, the 30th, all the people of Tavira will be able to use this infrastructure», announced the municipality of Tavira yesterday, the 29th, on its Facebook page.

This infrastructure replaced the old military bridge, which was built in 1990 as a temporary solution, following the damage caused by a flood on the neighboring Roman bridge, at a time when there were no alternatives to this crossing in the vicinity.

Even so, the bridge worked for over 25 years, ending up degrading a lot, which made the Chamber opt for a large investment to replace it, this time with a permanent bridge.

The bridge project was, even so, far from being peaceful, with Tavira Semper claiming that it did not fit in with the aesthetics of the area and that it would only serve to bring more cars to the Baixa, among other criticisms.

On the part of the Chamber, the guarantee that the infrastructure would fit into the landscape and respect the historic center.
