Huelva lobbying for the high-speed rail link to the Algarve

Huelva is interested, but the Spanish central government is not

The mayors of Huelva unanimously approved a motion that defends the construction of the high-speed rail link with the Algarve and urges the Junta de Andalucia to request that the work be included in European funds Next Generation, so that the infrastructure is built as soon as possible.

According to Daily newspaper of Huelva, at yesterday's meeting of the Pleno del Ayuntamiento de Huelva, the members of this body, equivalent to the Portuguese Municipal Assemblies, all voted in favor of a proposal by the socialist group, in support of the demand of the Official Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Servicios y Navegación de Huelva to link building.

A broad consensus that Gabriel Cruz, mayor of Huelva, welcomed, taking into account that, in a first attempt, Adelante Huelva "frustrated the institutional position that had been planned beforehand, despite having reached unanimity during the debate", according to the Andalusian newspaper.

"It is essential that Huelva has a single voice to fight for something essential for its progress," defended the Spanish mayor.

Despite the pressure that the political forces in Huelva intend to exert, with this position taken by the Spanish central government, there are no signs that there is any interest in investing in this connection.

At least that is what Pedro Nuno Santos, Portuguese minister for Infrastructure and Housing said, at a parliamentary hearing.

The minister assured that the Portuguese Government is totally in favor of this link, even considering it “incomprehensible that the Mediterranean corridor ends in Huelva and is not extended to the Algarve and that the Algarve does not have an opportunity to benefit from a link that bring a tour kit».

“The problem is that the Spaniards have not shown any interest and that makes our work very difficult. We won't be able to make a connection to Huelva if the Spaniards don't want to," said the governor.
