Unemployment registered in the Algarve decreased by 0,3%, in February, compared to January. In practice, this means that at the end of February there were 112 fewer people registered at the Algarve Employment Centers than at the end of the first month of the year.

According to data released this Monday by the Employment and Vocational Training Institute, at the end of February, 33.459 workers were enrolled in the IEFP in the Algarve.

The decrease of this value, in relation to the first month of the year, even goes against the national trend, which had an increase of registered unemployed, from January to February, of 1,8%.

If the comparison is made with the same month of last year, even before the pandemic scenario, in the Algarve, there is an increase of 74,4% of registered unemployed (+14.271), a value higher than that registered in January ( 61,3%).

This increase in the year-on-year variation is related to the fact that, normally, recruitment for the tourist peak season intensifies in February, something that has not happened this year.

Compared to other regions, after the Algarve, Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, it had the second highest increase compared to the same month last year, standing at +52,9%. Alentejo registered an increase of 20,7%. At the national level, the increase was 36,8%.

By municipalities, Albufeira continues to be the municipality in the Algarve with the highest number of unemployed people registered (6.558). This is followed by Portimão, with 5.391, and Loulé with 5.243 [see graph].

From January to February, the oscillation between unemployed registered by municipality was not homogeneous. There were municipalities such as Albufeira and Portimão that had a decrease in enrollments, while Faro, Loulé or Olhão recorded increases.

According to IEFP data, there were 266 job offers in February, 47 more than in January, but 540 less than in February last year.
