The President of the Republic appealed today to the prudence and wisdom of the Portuguese during the Easter period so as not to reverse the trend of containment of Covid-19 and to achieve a fading before the summer.

In a statement to the country, from the Belém Palace, in Lisbon, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reiterated the message he left in his inaugural address for a second presidential term about a sensible distrust: “As I said on March 9, it takes wisdom. And, from now on, good sense during Easter week”.

"Portuguese, we are closer than ever, but we still haven't reached the goal we want: a summer and autumn that really represent the end of more than a year of postponed lives, trampled lives, undone lives," said the boss of State.

"There is still a way to go, there is still precaution to be observed, there is still moderation to be maintained," he added.

Easter Sunday will be April 4th. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stressed that this is “a time of intense family encounter, particularly in certain areas of the continent and the autonomous regions”.

“On the other hand, the renewal of the state of emergency that I decreed today will be in force until April 15th, that is, beyond Easter time. And then there will be more schools, more open economic and social activities and much, much greater movement of people”, he said.

According to the President of the Republic, it is necessary to ensure that the lack of confinement occurs without “the numbers of infected people, hospitalized in intensive care and deaths, as well as the transmission or contagion indicator” increasing, reversing the trend of the last two months, to achieve “the fading” of Covid-19 in the country “before the summer”.

“It's only a few weeks, but a few weeks that could well be worth many months and years gained in all of our lives. And let's start already at Easter, even before the April and May openings. With prudence, with a sense of solidarity, with increased hope for the future. Portugal deserves it. All of us, Portuguese, deserve it”, he reinforced.
