The Center for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of the South (CMR Sul), in São Brás de Alportel, will have, as of this Wednesday, March 3rd, «a new clinical scope aimed at the rehabilitation of Covid-19 patients who were also subject to invasive mechanical ventilation and needing specific, more intensive rehabilitation programs with a multidisciplinary approach».

According to the University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA), this is an «innovative service in the area of rehabilitation, since the entire protocol is carried out by the team of this centre, specialized in rehabilitation».

"This new valence aims to provide a national response, being a reference center for other hospitals in the country," says CHUA.

After the acute phase, hospitalized patients may still present complications caused by Covid-19, which can range from more severe conditions, such as post-admission syndrome in intensive care, to changes in respiratory, cardiovascular, locomotion, swallowing, voice and speech functions. , cognitive-behavioral and humoral, causing limitations in the performance of self-care and activities of daily living.

"Due to the need for longer intervention times, namely during inpatients and the high complexity of many of the clinical situations, the existence of Specialized Rehabilitation Centers, included in the Hospital Referral Network for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (RRHMFR), is justified. ), such as the Center for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of the South which is part of the University Hospital Center of the Algarve», concludes CHUA.
