CEAT citizens debate sustainable water management

Session will take place on Sunday

“Water: a Right to Life, for Sustainable Management” is the theme of the second session of the Citizens' Forum Citizenship by the Center for Agrarian Experimentation and Urban Gardens of Tavira (CEAT), which will take place online and will be broadcast on facebook, on Sunday, the 14th, at 18:00.

This debate will be moderated by members of the movement and will feature the intervention of experts. All citizens are invited not only to watch, but to participate, something they can do. following this link.

“The thematic session was organized due to the growing citizen interest in the water issue. With the fall of the last rains, many of us feel relieved thinking that a potential increase in rainfall is the solution to the water problem», illustrate the event's organizers, questioning whether this is really true.

«Some say that the lack of water in the Algarve is a structural problem and it will not be the major engineering works that will put an end to the issue. In this case, the controversy holds a great opportunity: to build a water resources management that is truly participatory and integrated. The people of the Algarve are not mere consumers, but valuable partners who seek to be heard and contribute to finding solutions that give back, for example, to young people and future generations the chances of prospering, given the numerous challenges they will face", add the citizens by CEAT.

The movement believes that, "together with the government and other social actors, we can achieve a diversification in the origin of the water we need to govern our needs." Surface, underground, storm water and treated wastewater “are each suitable for a different purpose and should be seen as complementary and integral to a single system”.

“After all, our water is only one, but it deserves to be used in the most intelligent way possible. Transparency in consumption and in the values of water losses from the network is necessary for a more strategic consumption, which leads to harmony between the different economic sectors - namely agriculture with 56,8% of consumption, the urban sector with 34%, in addition tourism/golf and industry sectors», believe the session organizers.

“Finally, it is necessary to remember that water is a right for all forms of life. We need to contribute to the health of ecosystems that provide valuable services that all living beings enjoy, including water filtration, aquifer supply and bioremediation of contaminated water. these are valuable stakeholders which must be regenerated and incorporated into urban planning, in order to make our cities water-sensitive as well as resilient to weather events», concluded Citizens by CEAT
