For the Algarve photographer, winning this competition was "a huge joy"

They are «conceptual photographs that tell a story through images». Algarve photographer André Boto won the WPE Awards First Half 2021 photographic competition, with a set of four photos that show, for example, life in times of pandemic or the omnipresence of social networks.

This is a competition in which a total of 4700 photographers participated. The Algarvian André Boto, born in Silves, was the overall winner of the competition, achieving the podium in four different categories – and with four different photographs.

Still, in conversation with the Sul Informação, explained how the genesis of all is the same: «they are photographs to tell stories».

In the “Coronavirus” category, for example, the Algarvian got 1st place with an image that sums up so well what life is like in these atypical times.

“In the last year, our life is mostly done at home. We spend the day at home and everything happens at home. It turned out to be what I wanted to portray», he says.

Winning photo in the «Commercial» category

In the “Commercial” category, in which the model Mikinha Miki appears, the photographer wanted to convey the idea of the centrality that the cell phone currently has.

“There is the issue of social networks, of this constant presence… Often, we even forget what is really happening around us”, he adds.

The other two photographs that reached the podium were in the categories “Photomontage” (2nd place), in an image with the presence of the musician Eduardo Ramos and his lute, and “Food”, an image in which everything – even the bread – appears painted in white.

Interestingly, the awarded photos turn out to be «the most conceptual I've sent», reports the photographer, whose creation process involves «being very attentive to what's going on, whether it's movies, news or works by other colleagues».

For the Algarve photographer, to have won this competition was «an enormous joy».

«When you go to a competition, you always have that hope of reaching the top. When you start to see the 3rd place, the 2nd and then you show up…it's a great joy”, he told our newspaper.

Within the world's top 100, there were three more Portuguese photographers: Pedro Messias (50th place), Luís Miranda (51st) and António Coelho (58th place).
