Algarvio João Virgínia and Tomás Tavares (Farense) called up for the U21 Euro

This under-21 European will take place in Hungary and Slovenia, in an unprecedented model

The Algarve goalkeeper João Virgínia and Tomás Tavares, a Farense player, were called up for the European Under-21 Football Championship, announced this Monday, March 15, the coach Rui Jorge. 

In total, Rui Jorge called 23 players, highlighting the entries of Tiago Tomás (Sporting) and Francisco Conceição (FC Porto) who debut at this level.

João Virgínia, Everton goalkeeper who recently played their first game in the English I League, is the only Algarve on the list that still has the presence of a player who plays for a club in the region.

 

 

Tomás Tavares, a right-back who plays for Farense on loan from Benfica, was one of those called by Rui Jorge.

This under-21 European Championship will take place in Hungary and Slovenia, in an unprecedented model: the group stage will be played from the 24th to the 31st of March, while the knockout games (from the quarterfinals to the final) will be played from the 31st of May on the 6th of June, already after the end of the national championships.

In this first phase, Portugal will play all matches in Slovenia. The first will be against Croatia (25 March, at 20:00) and the second on the 28th, at 20:00, against England.

The group stage will end with the meeting with Switzerland, scheduled for 18:00 on 31 March.
