7000 people in the Algarve receive food support from Social Security

Social Canteens have the capacity to serve 19.366 meals per month in the Algarve

More than 7000 people are receiving, every month, food support provided by the District Center of Faro of Social Security.

In a note sent to the newsrooms, Social Security explains that this support is given through the «distribution of prepared meals and the distribution of food to the most needy people and the development of follow-up measures with a view to their social inclusion».

Under the Food Emergency Program, the District Center for Faro 21 Social Canteen Protocols have been signed. Currently, according to Social Security, there is the installed capacity to serve 656 meals a day, seven days a week, which allows serving a total of 19.366 meals per month.

These protocols are distributed by the municipalities of Albufeira, Castro Marim, Faro, Lagoa, Lagos, Loulé, Olhão, Portimão, Silves, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António.

The social canteen response «presents a perspective of complementarity with the Operational Support Program for the Most Deprived People (POAPMC) and other measures, in promoting the coverage of food needs by the measures that best suit the characteristics of the recipients», framed Social Security .

This Operational Support Program for the Most Deprived People covers all the Algarve's municipalities and delivers food to 6.216 people per month.

Also within the scope of the Social Canteen cooperation agreements, distributed by the municipalities of Albufeira, Loulé, Olhão, Portimão, São Brás de Alportel, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António, 415 users are co-funded and supported per month.

Bearing in mind that beneficiaries cannot receive more than one type of aid, «the food support increased by Social Security for the most socially vulnerable population in the district reaches more than 7000 citizens every month», the note concludes.
