Virtual reality technology will “rehabilitate for life” seniors in Alcoutim

Alcoutim launches new program to «promote active aging and contribute to increasing the well-being of the elderly»

Virtual reality glasses and a Wii console with a balance platform will help the rehabilitation and physical and cognitive stimulation of seniors in Alcoutim.

The alcouteneja Chamber will sign a protocol with the Humanitarian Center of Tavira of the Portuguese Red Cross to implement the “rehabilitate for life” project, which uses virtual reality technology to “promote active aging and contribute to increasing the well-being of seniors".

«Cognitive stimulation using virtual reality aims to provide various experiences, from simple sensory stimulation, through virtual visits to museums, to exergaming (video games that involve physical exercise), being the virtual reality experience adapted to the ability to each user as indicated in the diagnosis», according to the Municipality of Alcotuim.

In these recreational activities, «individuals practice light and fun activities of a therapeutic nature, which stimulate their motor system».

The project is aimed at people over 65 years of age and will be implemented and monitored by a multidisciplinary team, with a psychologist, occupational therapist, sociocultural animator and scientific support from the University of Algarve.

Those interested in participating or in finding out more about the program should contact the Social Action Office of the Municipality of Alcoutim, on the number 281 540 559.
