CHUA field hospital received 170 patients in the first month

More than 60% of patients received came from other regions.

The Campaign Hospital, installed in Portimão Arena, received 170 patients during the first month of operation, 105 of which came from other regions. The balance of the activity is «extremely positive», in the opinion of Ana Castro, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA).

During this first month, 126 patients were discharged and 22 were transferred to one of the Hospital Units of CHUA. On the other hand, there were 22 deaths of patients in this field hospital, which opened on 10 January.

Ana Castro, who also wore her medical uniform to take over the coordination of this structure, praises CHUA's "daily commitment, the extra hours and the additional effort of professionals" who have guaranteed the functioning of this structure, in partnership with the Chamber and Civil Protection of Portimão.

«We showed that the Algarve is not just beaches for tourism: we are much more than that. When the country needed it, we didn't fail. We were there and we will always be there, so give us the capacity to do it», he says.

Implemented in record time in a structure that had to be fully adapted and equipped to function as an infirmary for the treatment of patients with Covid-19, neither the physical constraints of the space or the reduced team for the number of users it received were impeding factors for us « we are proud of our responsiveness”, concludes Ana Castro.
