Covid-19: Weddings sector with loss of turnover in the order of 90% in 2020

26,1% of weddings were canceled

The wedding sector in Portugal had turnover losses of around 90% in 2020, due to the covid-19 pandemic, which interrupted much of the activity, reveals a study now released.

Conducted by BestEvents, the company responsible for organizing national and international fairs dedicated to wedding, and by the magazine "I Love Brides", the study that Lusa had access to today reveals that 34,2% of the surveyed companies had losses in the order of 90 % and 19,8% close to 80%, while 18% had no revenue (between 90 to 100%).

The study was carried out with companies in sectors related to weddings, such as jewellery, spaces, cake 'designers', wedding organizers, photography and videography, decoration, invitations and souvenirs, clothing for the bride and groom and accessories, hair and make-up, branch of the bride, entertainment, car rental and honeymoon.

The participation of more than a hundred companies linked to the sector showed that among 6.231 weddings that had been scheduled in total, only 1.049 were held (16,8%), with a large part (66,2%) to be postponed to 2021 and 7,7 .2022% for XNUMX.

However, more than half of the companies (55,8%) were unable to reschedule all postponements they had, with 38% of these companies having to return the signals.

The cancellation was high, in a total of 26,1%, and of this percentage 63,2% even gave up on the wedding and 12,6% canceled due to unavailability of dates, among other reasons.

In view of the moments of uncertainty due to the pandemic situation, the companies' confidence indexes for the year 2021 were evaluated, with 46% showing to have between 25% and 50% confidence in the recovery, compared to 31,9% between 50 and 75% . The very unsure are 14,2%, while 8% are very confident that the recovery will occur later this year.

Since the beginning of the pandemic situation in Portugal, in March 2020, the two entities that carried out the survey have been developing several actions in favor of the sector, calling for its union to bring its concerns and proposals to the Government, to that “there is a message of confidence to the market”.

“We cannot forget that it is a seasonal activity. Therefore, this message of trust comes in the sense of ensuring sustainability and the recovery of customer confidence. It is important for the government to present a date forecast for the sector to start operating”, stressed Jorge Ferreira, executive director of BestEvents.

Among the companies that responded to the survey, 49,6% are from the North, 21,7% from the Metropolitan Area of ​​Lisbon, 14,8% from the Center and 11,3% from the Metropolitan Area of ​​Porto, with the remainder sharing. between Alentejo, Algarve, Azores and Madeira.
