Câmara de Lagos and association (A)GARRA join together for new coworking space

The idea came under the 2017 Participatory Budget

The Câmara de Lagos teamed up with the (A)GARRA association to manage a new coworking space, in a wing of the former Gil Eanes Secondary School building.

According to the municipality, under an already approved protocol, the municipality will assign to (A)GARRA the operational management of this new collaborative work space.

The Chamber will support «the expenses inherent to external supplies and services, giving this young association from Lagos an annual financial support of 26.600 euros, with a view to the operation of the space and the promotion of its program of activities».

The facilities, located at Rua dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra, in a wing of the former Gil Eanes Secondary School building (which was first Industrial School and currently houses the Youth Space), were created by the local authority, which rehabilitated and converted an old electricity room. in an open and optimized space to receive young entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs, liberal professionals, digital nomads and remote workers.

The idea arose within the scope of the Participatory Budget 2017, inspired by the informal structure already in operation at the Espaço Jovem. The proposal would end up being one of those chosen by the population, having been put into practice through a municipal contract.

«This equipment is just one of the various responses that the municipality of Lagos has been developing to monitor the evolution of work models, namely the coworking model, a recent phenomenon that is based on a differentiated approach, providing learning, social interaction, meaning collective and cooperation», says the Câmara de Lagos.

According to the municipality, this is "a trend brought about by technology, internet and mobility, which has decisively changed the relationship between geographic location and the exercise of socio-economic activities, and which has become even more critical in the current context of the pandemic."

Added to this initiative are Espaço Empresa, the adhesion to the InvestAlgarve and Algarve Systems and Technology Partnership regional development networks (Algarve STP), the Fábrica do Empreeenderor (recently created), the Algarve Revit +, the involvement in the SusTowns project and the promoting entrepreneurship in schools.
