The Municipality of Aljezur will offer the University Hospital Center of the Algarve 2 bags of sweet potatoes, corresponding to about 10 tons of this «famous and appreciated» local product, as a form of «thanks, recognition and encouragement of courage» to health professionals .

"Given the situation, and with due recognition, this offer is a treat for medical staff, nurses, assistants and other hospital support staff, who have been on the first line of combating the Covid-19 pandemic from the very beginning. », is read in a proposal presented by José Gonçalves, mayor of Aljezur, which was unanimously approved in a meeting of the Chamber.

The mayor justifies this offer, from the outset, with the "Herculean effort" that the pandemic is demanding from society, "especially professionals linked to health", who "every day give their best"

José Gonçalves reinforces this idea, speaking of the «role of effort and dedication, to which we should be grateful», of those who are at the forefront of the fight against Covid.

On the other hand, there is the issue of the local economy and sweet potato producers.

Even with “the partnership effort between the City Council and the Association of Sweet Potato Producers of Aljezur, in the holding of the sweet potato festival, in the acquisition of sweet potatoes as a gift to be placed in the Christmas baskets, as well as the offer to various local and regional entities, as a product of excellence”, the production and marketing of this product “has suffered a considerable decrease”, he concluded.
