The contract to replace and improve the energy efficiency of the lighting system on Avenida dos Descobrimentos, in Albufeira, will start “soon”, as soon as the necessary 2500 LED luminaires are available.
The objective of this intervention, which is carried out in partnership with EDP Distribuição, is to standardize, «aesthetically and technically, the entire avenue with more modern material, easy to maintain and, essentially, safer for people and goods in case of accident".
This project will cost 182 euros and will join others that aim to increase energy efficiency, while ensuring energy and cost savings.
Also in the phase of supplying luminaires, to begin installation this month, is the “Contract to increase energy efficiency in the public lighting network in the municipality of Albufeira – first phase”, which will have an estimated cost of around 675 thousand euros.
This work, which will take around one hundred days to complete, «is also part of the full replacement plan for all the city's luminaires and the intervention area provided for in this project is the old area, from Rossio to Praia dos Aveiros, and main access roads to the city”, according to the City Council of Albufeira.
The second phase of this work is already under contract and will cost 213 thousand euros.
"In addition to energy efficiency, quality lighting, recognition of objects and people at night will benefit, thus improving public safety at night", summarizes the municipality.
To date, «over 955 LED luminaires have been installed, over 400 paid for by the municipality and over 555 installed by EDP at the request of the municipality».
«We are also going to replace all the luminaires in the urban center of Albufeira and for that purpose we will have to carry out more public tenders to replace a total of 6200 luminaires, from the Marina to Balaia, Alto dos Caliços and Montechoro», according to José Carlos Rolo, the President of the City Council.
This “is an investment for the future, which allows a simple return on capital in four years”. In 2021 alone, «the 3555 LED luminaires save around 167 thousand euros»
«In addition to visibly reducing costs, we are contributing to the reduction of electricity consumption and, consequently, of the ecological footprint», illustrated José Carlos Rolo.
With the works that will be carried out this year, the percentage of public lighting in the municipality that will use LED lamps will rise to 15,2%.
It is the municipality's intention to «extend this measure to the other parishes, in a partnership with EDP Distribuição, in which the Council will finance the process in urban centers and EDP will deal essentially with rural areas».
