Circular economy project wants to give new life to hotel waste

Entrepreneurs in the hospitality sector are challenged to participate

A project led by the Algarve's Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) is seeking to breathe new life into hotel waste, in a circular economy logic, both in the Algarve and in the neighboring province of Huelva, in Spain.

The Circular Economy and Waste of Hotel Soaps (ECRESHOT) project «aims to know the amounts of waste soap and other types of waste (such as bio-waste, textile waste, furniture and household appliances) that result from the hotel activity, trying to identify partners in the business fabric of the region that show interest in valuing these wastes and/or products, promoting an innovative business model that integrates its circularity potential», according to the CCDR of the Algarve.

However, it has already been created a website for ECRESHOT, "where you can find information about the project's partners and products", as well as other information.

«Since this is a participatory project, the contribution of hotel and accommodation agents, as well as waste management operators in the region, is essential. In order to know the data regarding the quantity, typology and routing given to waste during the year 2019 in the Algarve region, it was prepared a questionnaire that is available for filling on the platform”, calls the coordinating entity of the project.

Despite this being an initiative that was born within the scope of the Regional Agenda for the Circular Economy, the Algarve CCDR decided to look for partners across the border, which allowed it to associate this project with the Interreg VA España-Portugal (POCTEP) program.

"Given the common characteristics between the Algarve and Andalusia regions, the adoption of a common strategy was considered advantageous, in particular with the province of Huelva, so that partnership contacts were established with the Diputación Provincial de Huelva", according to the project coordinators.

On the other hand, a partnership was created in the business area with NERA - Business Association of the Algarve Region, bearing in mind that one of the objectives of ECRESHOT «is to strengthen the competitiveness of SMEs».

«It is expected, at the end of the project, together with the contribution of the tourism sector to the Regional Agenda of the circular economy in the Algarve, to know the amount of waste produced, reach a high level of separation and transport to an appropriate destination and promote its appreciation. It is intended to encourage the creation of new waste management companies, and/or the conversion of others already on the market, promoting the environmental and social responsibility of the Hotels and Waste Management Operators involved in the process, in the Algarve region and of Andalusia”, framed the CCDR of the Algarve.
