Loulé approves suspension of the PDM at the mouth of Almargem and Trafal for another year

Decision «gains even greater strength at a time when the process of classifying the area surrounding Foz do Almargem and Trafal as a Local Protected Landscape is underway»

The Loulé Chamber approved this Wednesday, January 6, the suspension, for another year, of the Municipal Master Plan (PDM), in the Foz do Almargem and Trafal area, in Quarteira.

This measure comes after, in February 2019, have already approved, by a majority, this measure, which is in force in an area of about 234 hectares.

The suspension of the PDM prevents the construction of yet another tourist enterprise, in this case, the Quinta do Oceano project, whose promoting entity is the Special Closed Real Estate Investment Fund — Invesfundo VII, of the Novo Banco group.

According to the Municipality of Loulé, «along with the valorization of the entire urban system of Quarteira by avoiding a greater density of construction and occupation of the territory, this measure took into account the environmental values of this area and the need to protect the ecosystems, in particular the Almargem and Carcavai streams and respective lakes, also in line with the Municipal Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change».

At a time when the Loulé PDM is still under review, the municipality says that it "remains firm on the purposes that led to the adoption of these preventive measures", in a decision that "gains even greater strength at a time when the process of classification of the surrounding area of Foz do Almargem and Trafal as Local Protected Landscape».

This is not, moreover, the only measure of its kind taken by the Câmara de Loulé. Also in Quarteira, the local authority decided to suspend the PDM on the 1,3-hectare plot, where the weekly Wednesday market takes place, very close to the beach.

The aim is to prevent further developments from being built in an area where the concrete is already king and lord, to advance, instead, with the creation of green spaces and conviviality.
