According to data from REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais

On Wednesday, electricity consumption broke a daily record of 11 years and that of natural gas surpassed the peak of 2017, according to data from REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais released today.

The cold spell is the reason for the increase in energy consumption, leading to breaking records both in terms of peak and daily consumption, says the manager of energy networks in Portugal.

The maximum daily consumption of electricity reached 185,1 GWh on Wednesday (13 January), surpassing the maximum recorded on 11 January 2010.

The highest peak in electricity consumption was recorded at 19:30 on the 12th, and was 9.887 MW, surpassing the record of 9.403 MW recorded in 2010.

The highest consumption of natural gas was recorded on the 5th of December, at 299,1 GWh, surpassing the previous record of 269,9 GWh of December 5, 2017.

Also on the 5th, at 20:00, there was the highest consumption peak ever, with 14.874 MW of consumption, when the previous maximum was 13.539 MW recorded on 7 January 2020.

Still in natural gas, the data show new historical highs registered on the 5th in terms of daily emission from the Sines LNG terminal to the network and on the 8th in exports to Spain, through the Campo Maior interconnection.
