RTP's facilities in the Algarve capital were classified as Set of Municipal Interest, at the Chamber Meeting of Faro of yesterday, the 18th, in the culmination of a process started in 2019, as proposed by the PS, which deserved the support of the right-wing coalition, in the majority of this local authority from Faro.

The four socialist councilors of the Chamber of Faro came to the public today, affirms their «great satisfaction» at seeing approved «the classification of the “Urban Complex formed by the antenna protection enclosure, Building of the Broadcasting Center and Annex Buildings”».

"This way, the relevant material and immaterial heritage associated with RTP, unique in the history of communication and information in Portugal, will be guaranteed", framed the Farenses socialists.

After all, the request for classification made more than a year ago by the PS councilors was due to a set of circumstances 'that put at risk the integrity and perpetuity of RTP's facilities in Faro (since they are located on land on which it has fallen sales intention by RTP). "

At the time, the socialists argued that the RTP building Faro, located in Campo Senhora da Saúde, next to Avenida Calouste Gulbenkian, «presents a relevant cultural value for the Municipality of Faro, not only for its architectural characteristics (in terms of the value of the materials and aesthetics and because they portray a time, from the 50s), but also because the RTP Building Faro it bears symbolic values, since it is a remarkable witness of experiences and historical facts of regional communication and information».

Taking this into account, say the socialists, "it was imperative to propose their special protection and enhancement."

The proposal ended up having the endorsement and vote in favor of the other five members of the executive, all elected by the PSD/CDS-PP/PPM/MPT coalition and including the president of the Chamber Rogério Bacalhau.

Since October 7, 2019, when the proposal to start the classification process was approved, the PS councilors persisted "in developing and completing the entire procedure".

«RTP is the company with the most history and tradition in communication and information in Portugal, having been founded in 1935 with the name of National Broadcaster and started the first regular radio broadcasts in 1935 and television broadcasts in 1957. In the south of the country , the State decided to move forward, at the end of 1947, with the installation in Faro of the Southern Regional Issuer of the National Broadcaster (after Lisbon, Porto and, jointly, with Coimbra), on land ceded by the Municipality of Faro, with its installation and entry into operation in the 50s, before Coimbra. RTP has had the important mission of providing the public service of communication and information and dissemination of the Portuguese language in the world, reaching a vast and heterogeneous public and covering large segments of the Portuguese population, in Portugal and in the world", concluded the socialists .
