The increase in cases in the Algarve is blamed on the «lack of conscience of some families»

There is transmission "widespread in the region" says the Regional Health delegate

The cases of Covid-19 Algarve continue to increase "exponentially" and the fault lies in the "lack of conscience of some families" in the Christmas celebrations, considered this Friday, the 8th, António Pina, president of AMAL – Comunidade Intermunicipal do Algarve, at the press conference to assess the epidemiological situation in the Algarve region.

This repair comes on a day when there are 419 new Covid-19 cases in the Algarve, a new record after the 394 reported on Wednesday. There is also one more mortal victim to mourn.

The increase in infections is the result of "generalized transmission throughout the region" and not specific outbreaks, revealed Ana Cristina Guerreiro, the Regional Health Delegate for the Algarve. The only exception is Tavira, where the many cases that have been reported are largely linked to an outbreak originating in a city gym.

A situation that “is difficult” and that is “the result of the irresponsibility of each one of us”, said António Pina.

“If this situation continues or increases in the next few days, it is good that we all prepare for a situation of general confinement, or more aggravated. It is the price that, as a community, we will have to pay for the irresponsibility of some», he stressed.

Among the representatives of the different authorities present, the mayor from Olhano and president of AMAL was the most critical of the alleged “lowering of guard” of the population, in relation to the measures to contain the pandemic. But he wasn't the only one.

“We started the year with a worrying epidemiological situation, as a result of some flexibility at Christmas, hardly used by some citizens. As a result, we now have a heavy situation», said Ana Cristina Guerreiro.

After all, the Algarve had, for the first time, a daily increase of more than four hundred cases, which makes the total number of cases, in accumulated numbers since the beginning of the pandemic, to 9515.

Deaths have also been gradually increasing, standing today at 85 in cumulative terms.

In the Algarve, according to data from the Regional Health Authority, which are «a little different from those of the DGS», there have already been 6550 people to recover, with 2880 cases remaining active.

There are now 92 hospitalized people in the region's hospitals, seven more than yesterday, 17 of them in intensive care (-1) and nine ventilated (=).
