VRSA Chamber gives 10 thousand euros in food to institutions in the county

The measure aims to strengthen food support in the county

Vila Real de Santo António City Council purchased 10 euros in food to be delivered this week to around 400 needy families in the municipality.

The action was developed in partnership with VRSA's Santa Casa da Misericórdia, the Red Cross VRSA delegation, Refood and the Associação de Beneficência Mão Amiga, institutions that will be responsible for distributing the goods.

The measure aims to strengthen food support in the county and responds to the increase in requests for help triggered by the worsening social and economic scenario caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Since this year there will be no New Year's Eve celebrations in the county, we decided to direct part of this remaining budget to provide support to those in greatest need and contribute so that needy households can have a happier Christmas" says Conceição Cabrita, president of the VRSA Chamber.

The baskets include foodstuffs such as olive oil, grain, beans, rice, flour, cereals, milk, among other goods.

Last November, the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António had already granted a financial contribution to the Food Bank Against Hunger of the Algarve, in the amount of 10 thousand euros, which is now added to this reinforcement to the IPSS locations.

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic situation, the municipality has also adopted a wide range of sanitary measures and social, economic and financial support measures aimed at overcoming and minimizing the impact of the pandemic on the daily lives of the population.

In total, this set of support already represents an investment of more than 650 thousand euros.
