Câmara de Olhão distributes over 500 food baskets to needy families

More than 800 families from Olho are currently assisted with foodstuffs, through the council's IPSS and the Food Bank

In recent days, the Municipality of Olhão has allocated 500 food baskets to Private Social Solidarity Institutions (IPSS) in the municipality, which distributed them to the neediest families. “It was another extra, a Christmas treat, which makes all the difference in these difficult times we live in”, says the mayor António Miguel Pina.

This time, after contacting all the IPSS, ACASO, Portuguese Red Cross – Delegation of Olhão, Verdades Escondidas Associação, Celeiro do Amor and Nova Aliança Social Center (NACS) in Olhão, requested and received this support.

“This was just one more help, as we work, all year round, with our IPSS, in partnership with the Social Network of Olhão, so that no one goes hungry in our municipality. Therefore, I warn, once again: if someone is in need of food aid and is not supported yet, they should contact the council's IPPS or the Municipality”, reinforces the mayor of Olho.

During these last months, the Municipality has also increased the support it already gave to institutions that help the most needy, due to the difficulties that many families face, especially due to the covid-19 pandemic. Further financial support was also given to institutions ACASO and the Portuguese Red Cross – Delegation of Moncarapacho-Fuseta, for the purchase of two refrigerated chambers that will allow the storage of food items received.

Recently, financial support was also approved for the Algarve's Food Bank Against Hunger, so that this entity can face the loss of food donations, also resulting from the pandemic we are experiencing.

More than 800 families from Olhão are currently assisted with foodstuffs, through the council's IPSS and the Food Bank Against Hunger of the Algarve, entities that have the support of the Municipality of Olhão.
