Bishop of the Algarve presides over New Year's Mass at the Shrine of the Sovereign Mother

This year the mass takes place earlier than usual

The bishop of the Algarve will preside at the Mass on January 1st at the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, in Loulé, this year at 11:00 am, due to the limitations imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

D. Manuel Quintas will “ask for the protection of the Sovereign Mother throughout the New Year”, in the “most expressive Marian sanctuary in the Algarve”, on World Day of Peace 2021 and when the Church also celebrates the Solemnity of Saint Mary, Mother of God .

The diocesan newspaper «Folha do Domingo» contextualizes that this Eucharist usually takes place at 15 pm, but the rules enacted because of the pandemic oblige us to change the Mass time to 00 am.

The Portuguese government decreed a mandatory curfew from 23:00 on December 31st and on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd it is only possible to travel until 13:00h, in addition to the prohibition of moving between municipalities from 00:00h on December 31st until 05:00h on 4th of December January 2021, except for reasons of health or urgent urgency.

On the Solemnity of Christmas, the Bishop of the Algarve remembered that this celebration predisposes to “build human fraternity” and in its Christmas message it already had encouraged to greater attention for the most disadvantaged.
