Albufeira delivers Christmas hampers to 938 families

For 420 families, this is an extension of the support they have received monthly from the Chamber, during the pandemic

The Municipality of Albufeira delivered Christmas baskets to 938 families in the municipality, a measure that will benefit a total of 1724 adults and 682 children.

For 420 of the families supported, this Christmas basket is a reinforcement of the monthly support they have been receiving from the municipality, under a program launched at the time the pandemic began.

Since March, the Municipality of Albufeira has been providing families in difficulty with baskets «which are not lacking in a wide variety of dry, fresh and frozen foods, vegetables, dairy products and hygiene and cleaning products».

"This measure has allowed to take to a significant number of families, a support of great importance to face the growing difficulties experienced by many of those who lost their income", according to Ana Pífaro, Vice-President of the Chamber responsible for Social Action.

This month, as Christmas is celebrated, some more typical products of this festive season will come in the bag, such as «the traditional codfish, the king cake, the bread rolls or the chocolate to delight the youngsters».

«To implement this measure, the municipality acquired around 1000 chocolate packages for adults, and 700 chocolates for children; more than 800 kilos of pineapples, 1000 packages of raisins and 1,1 tons of cod. 1075 king cakes, 1100 packages of almond cakes and 1000 packages of biscuits were made», described the municipality.

This reinforcement to the baskets that are already delivered monthly, which cost 30 euros per month, «involved an additional investment that exceeded 36 thousand euros».

After a visit to the place where the baskets are prepared, accompanied by Ana Pífaro, the mayor of Albufeira José Carlos Rolo underlined “all the work developed in a network by the local authority and social institutions, which allow for signaling and assisting those who feel the greatest difficulties in the current situation”.

For the mayor "our goal is to reach the largest possible number of families, so that we can mitigate the effects of this crisis and, naturally, in this time of renewal and hope, we can bring a little more comfort to those who need it».

The baskets have already been handed over to all the families indicated, through five IPSS in the municipality, with which the Chamber signed a protocol so that they would be responsible for the acquisition of goods and for the organization and distribution of these baskets, with funding from the municipality.
