PSD proposes tax reduction on arbutus brandy

Congresswoman from Castelo Branco presented a proposal

The PSD will propose, as a measure for the 2021 State Budget, the lowering of the tax on spirit drinks made from medronho, since this is "one of the biggest obstacles to the sale/sale of the product, a situation mentioned by the producers" .

The PSD intends to set at 25% of the normal rate the alcohol tax rates for products manufactured exclusively from strawberry fruits, produced in the territories of the interior center of the country, in the north of Alentejo, in the south of the district of Beja and in Algarve mountains.

The proposed tax write-off will last for three years, and its renewal may be requested, in order to force verification of its effectiveness.

Cláudia André, deputy elected by Castelo Branco and the first subscriber to the proposal, says that the measure is intended to "encourage drink producers to produce more and, with this, also encourage the production and use of strawberry trees, an autochthonous and spontaneous tree in the region".

It also aims to “encourage the regional economy from an endogenous product and contribute to the economic use of the forest as well as the prevention of fires”.

With this measure, which will be discussed in plenary next Tuesday, as mentioned by the Social-Democratic deputy, it is intended to “increase the producer's added value and thereby encourage an increase in sales volume, contributing in a way to support micro-enterprises, producers of aguardente de medronho, and maintain or increase employment in a particularly difficult phase like the one we are going through”.
