Loulé advances with actions to recover Ribeira do Cadoiço

A space with great tourist potential, Cadoiço has been discovered by many visitors who find, above all, in its waterfall a different, inspiring space in the heart of the urban centre.

Loulé Chamber is promoting a set of actions aimed at recovering the Ribeira do Cadoiço, a space with great tourist potential.

The objective is to solve «a problem of degradation of the structural condition and of the existing connections in the Ribeira do Cadoiço pipeline, a situation that is at the origin of the occurrence of “discharges” in the place and that worsens during the period of higher rainfall», says the autarchy.

After an inspection of the channeled section of Ribeira do Cadoiço, in October 2019, with the aim of surveying anomalies associated with the degradation of the structure, the study developed by LNEC - National Laboratory of Civil Engineering confirmed the existence of deficiencies and identified some improper connections of branches with domestic residual flow, as well as accesses with deficient plugging.

“In general, it was found that a significant part of the structure is in a deficit condition”, explains the City Council of Loulé.

In this context, LNEC's technical team left the Municipality of Loulé with two complementary recommendations that, at first, involve the need to fill important gaps in information on the existing infrastructure associated with wastewater and rainwater systems, and subsequently, the corrective intervention of the most serious anomalies.

In the first case, the municipality has already awarded services for the execution of the registration of infrastructure networks in the area that covers the water line that runs through the city of Loulé, thus enabling the georeferencing of the most affected structures to be facilitated.

At a later stage, and with these data in hand, the Department of Works and Management of Municipal Infrastructures will carry out the appropriate intervention at the site, whose project is already in the preparation stage.

In response to the concerns of the population, the municipality guarantees that «all measures are being taken, through intense work, not always visible, and that involves several municipal services, in addition to external entities, especially LNEC, to solve this problem, which is not of today, but which has been accentuated in recent years».

The Ribeira do Cadoiço originates from a spring located north of Loulé, more specifically on Cerro da Cabeça Gorda, crossing the entire city in a tunnel to the south of Loulé. At Franqueada, it joins the Ribeira do Carcavai, and flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Vale do Lobo.

A space with great tourist potential, Cadoiço has been discovered by many visitors who find, above all, in its waterfall a different, inspiring space in the heart of the urban centre.

It is also to enhance this heritage that the Almargem Association, in partnership with the Câmara de Loulé, saw the “Cadoiço Vive” application recently approved by the Environmental Fund. The renaturalization of ecosystems and the reinforcement of riparian flora and wild fauna are the main axes of this project.
