The new pedestrian bridge over the river in Aljezur has already opened

City Council has more plans for the riverside area of the town of Aljezur

The new pedestrian bridge over the Ribeira de Aljezur, downtown, is now open, ensuring more safety for pedestrians who, until now, used the narrow road bridge to cross that area.

José Gonçalves, mayor of Aljezur, told the Sul Informação that now «the infrastructures of Portugal need to move forward with the intervention they promised in the road bridge, eliminating the sidewalks that exist there and placing the necessary signs, in order to prevent pedestrians from continuing to pass through there».

Symbolically, the new pedestrian bridge opened to the public yesterday, October 29, when it was crossed by elements of the municipal executive.

The municipality considers that “this work is extremely important and long awaited by the population, who cross the road bridge in Aljezur every day. This new infrastructure, which cost around 200 thousand euros, thus allows for more and better mobility for pedestrians and, above all, guarantees more and better safety, as well as improving the fluidity of traffic on the road bridge».

The construction of the new bridge forced the creation of two foundations on the banks of the river, where the walkway is located, which has a span of about 40 meters, built in metal and with a floor made of recycled material.

This work is part of the municipal investments already made or planned for this riverside area. Last February, the Green Park of Ribeira de Aljezur had been completed, a new leisure space in the heart of the village, along the bank of that watercourse.
This intervention cost around 360 thousand euros, with 70% reimbursement by European Union funds, through CRESC Algarve 2020.

But the Aljezurense Chamber also saw it approved, last August, an application to the Environmental Fund, in the amount of 200 thousand euros, for an intervention along the Aljezur river.
