“Hope” serves as the motto for the “Baron de São João Walk & Art Fest 2020”

Registration opens this Tuesday, the 20th

“Esperança” will serve as the motto for the “Barão de São João Walk & Art Fest 2020”, the hiking festival, which unites nature and art, returning to the village of Barão de São João, in the municipality of Lagos, from 6 on November 8th.

Registration opens this Tuesday, October 20th, at 10:00 am, through the event website: www.walkartfest.pt.

The 3rd edition of this Festival, organized by the Municipality of Lagos and the Almargem Association, will feature this year a new artistic installation, whose works are, once again, in charge of the partner local artists.

“2020 was a year that put all humanity to the test. Everyone, without exception, had to reinvent ourselves and learn to be more resilient. What better message could the collective of artists from Barão de São João convey than that of HOPE? Hope for a better tomorrow! Hope that each one of us can do more and better!” explains the organization.

Composed of 19 pieces that convey a message of “Hope” by 13 artists, this artistic installation invites all Festival participants to walk peacefully through the beautiful village of Barão de São João, on a short path of about one kilometer.

The diverse three-day program consists of 76 activities, all free of charge, divided into 38 themed hikes and hikes (geology, archeology, heritage), 4 mountain biking tours, 11 environmental education activities for families, 13 workshops and 10 good activities -being (Yoga, Luohan Qigong (Chi Ckung), Tai Chi, Meditation).

This year, there was an increase in the total number of activities to try to make up for the reduction in participants per activity.

Highlights for some that are new this year, such as the construction of nest boxes or the tale “The busy day of the squirrel” for the younger ones, and the walks that call for drawing, promoted by local artist Eva Herre and Terminal Studio. There was also a bet on new walks along new itineraries, including a night walk.

The event secretariat space will be adapted according to DGS guidelines, given the Covid-19 pandemic situation, and all activities will take place outdoors. "There was a concern to desphase the activities at different meeting points and at different times, so as not to promote gatherings", explains the organization.

The event will once again count on several partnerships with tourist entertainment companies and official entities that will streamline many of these activities.

The Barão de São João Hiking Festival is part of the event's calendar Algarve Walking Season (AWS) which includes the other two hiking festivals existing in the region (Walking Festival Ameixial and the Alcoutim Hiking Festival).

The AWS is an initiative coordinated by Cooperative QRER – Cooperative for the Development of Low Density Territories, approved under an application of the Support Line for Tourism Development of the Interior, promoted by Turismo de Portugal / Algarve Tourism Region.
