Got a flat tire on your bike? Pinheiro e Rosa School arranges

Space was opened and even got two bikes

It's a workshop open to everyone and will fix bikes for anyone who wants to. The Pinheiro e Rosa Secondary School, in Faro, inaugurated, this Tuesday, 22nd of September, this new valence that “represents the continuation of our entire educational project very focused on sustainable development”.

And this project has a name: it's called “BikeMe” and it has encouraged students, teachers and staff to ride their bikes to school.

For this reason, the World Car Free Day, last Tuesday, was the ideal pretext to take another step forward (or is it a ride?), with the inauguration of the bicycle workshop.

“Basically, we're going to repair anyone's bicycles. Anyone can just bring it. There will be maintenance of bicycles for teachers, students, employees and we have a protocol with the University to support bicycles there. I have also already spoken with the PSP, in order to make a protocol», explained Francisco Soares, director of the Pinheiro e Rosa School Grouping, to the Sul Informação.

Students will work in the workshop, «both from professional courses and from regular education» and a responsible teacher. "This will be an activity, I don't say completely extracurricular, but it will also live on the voluntary work of students and teachers", said the director, himself a bicycle enthusiast.

The creation of this workshop came from «a necessity». The fact is that «there are already many more students arriving at school by bicycle», guarantees Francisco Soares.

“We started having requests from students and teachers and we decided to implement this workshop within the school. Our goal is always to encourage change in mobility and work on it from an early age», he added.

For the creation of the workshop, the Schools Group had the support of the Chamber of Faro, who bought the shelter where everything will work (for now, the workshop is housed in a small room at school).

Sophie Matias, Councilor of the Chamber of Faro, was present at the inauguration of this new area, where he made a point of highlighting, as Custódio Moreno, regional director of the Portuguese Sports and Youth Institute had already done, the «exceptional work» done at Pinheiro e Rosa.

"This grouping is a reference and hope others will replicate these ideas," added the councilwoman from Faro.

Sophie Matias, who rode her bicycle to the inauguration, even left a challenge to the students who listened to her: «Do the same! Come by bike! And spread the word!».
