New project makes known “100 Memories of Castro Marim”

Exhibition at Casa do Sal kicks off this project

An exhibition that brings together letters, photographs, postcards, documents and books belonging to the collection of the Castro Marim Digital Archive, on display at Casa do Sal, is the first initiative of the “100 Memories of Castro Marim” project, which was launched this Wednesday.

This project aims to be a «pillar in the construction of the history of the municipality and the territory and will make «an enormous contribution to the construction of a new perspective on the cultural and social identity of Castro Marim», according to the Chamber of Castro Marim.

The exhibition on display at Casa do Sal «goes far beyond the history of Castro Marim».

«Here are, by way of example, projects for the first major public works in the State in favor of the municipality, the EN 126 and the Ponte da Esteveira, which now connects the town to the coast, licenses for crossing the border, family trees of influential families in the country or personalities who settled in the territory and who stood out here», describes the municipality.

The “100 Memories” project was born at the end of last year, “with a challenge launched to the population, so that they would give these personal and/or family memories to the municipality”.

With the objective of «preserving, treating and disseminating the historical documentation of Castro Marim», the autarchy built «a chronologically contextualized narrative, which allows not only a rescue of the past, but also the construction of a new meaning about it».

«In this dive into individual and fragmented memories, an audiovisual survey was also carried out on the intangible heritage of Castro Marim, which can be viewed on a digital table available in the exhibition and, soon, on the municipality's website», added the Chamber of Castro Marim.

«This project opens a window to the world, and perpetuates “memories” of the works and people who have contributed to the beautiful history of this territory. Its enrichment will depend on what each person wants to add to it and on the guardians of this legacy, who have worked with great dedication, professionalism, with passion and soul», according to Filomena Cintra, vice president and councilor for Culture at the municipality of Castromarinense.

Anyone who wants to can still make a contribution, «sharing their memories, by loan or donation, through the email [email protected]».

The “100 Memórias de Castro Marim” also includes a street exhibition and the publication of a newspaper with this collection, inspired by the first existing newspaper in Castro Marim – “Flowers on Ruins”.

The “100 Memories of Castro Marim” project is co-financed by the Interreg Spain-Portugal 2014-2020 Programme, supported by the European Union, 75% co-financed by the FEDER, project 0131_FOURTOURS_5_E, and has the collaboration of all Parish Councils and community.
