Maria Aliete Galhoz, woman of Boliqueime's lyrics, died

In 1996, she received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Algarve

Maria Aliete Galhoz died last Sunday, September 20, aged 91. Born in Boliqueime, she was a poet, essayist, literary researcher and one of the pioneers in the study of Fernando Pessoa.

With a degree in Romance Philology from the University of Lisbon, she was a secondary school teacher for 19 years. Researcher at the National Institute of Scientific Research, she has published a Romanceiro Popular Português, in two volumes (vol. I, Romances Tradicionais, 1987; vol. II, Romances Religiosos e Cantigas Narrativas, 1988).

Maria Aliete Galhoz is still in history as a scholar of poets such as Fernando Pessoa and Mário de Sá Carneiro. The Loulet was even responsible for collecting and transcribing texts from the first printed version of “Livro do Desassossego”, by Fernando Pessoa (Bernardo Soares).

As an author, she published three poetry books: “Poeta Pobre” (1960), “Forgotten Fifteenth Morning – “Acto da Primavera” (1967) and “Poemas em Rosas” (1985).

In prose, he published the book of short stories entitled “No cry to my eyes” (1971).

All this vast career led to her receiving, on November 4, 1996, the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Algarve.

Moreover, UAlg has already decreed three days of academic mourning for the death of Maria Aliete Galhoz who, in 1999, was also awarded the honorary degree of Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique (1999).

Adriana Nogueira, regional director of Culture of the Algarve, also issued a note of regret, lamenting the death of Maria Aliete Galhoz, "a distinguished philologist, reputed specialist in Oral and Traditional Literature" and "recognized as a pioneer in personal studies".
