Câmara de Lagos supports hiking festival and Algarve Ultra Trail

Events are scheduled for November

The Câmara de Lagos will provide «financial and logistical» support for the holding of two large outdoor events in the municipality, the hiking festival “Walk & Art Fest – Barão de São João” and ALUT – Algarve Ultra Trail, which will take place in November.

A proposal to finance these two initiatives that have as a common denominator «the promotion of outdoor activities, contact with nature and heritage, combating seasonality and desertification of low-density territories» was approved at the last Chamber Meeting of Lagos.

The Walk & Art Fest, which this year takes place between the 6th and 8th of November, is a walking and art festival that results from the partnership between the municipality, Almargem (the managing entity of Via Algarviana), the União de Freguesias de Bensafrim and Barão de São João, the Barão de São João Cultural Center, the Algarve Tourism, the Nature and Forest Conservation Institute and the QRER Cooperative.

«This event has as a particularity the fact that it has associated a strong creative component, resulting from the involvement of the artistic community residing in Barão de São João, and environmental education», according to Câmara de Lagos.

The support to be given to this event will be of 9130 ​​euros, which will be «shared by Almargem and by the Cultural Center of Barão de São João, a community that provides the facilities that serve as a logistical basis for the walks and activities».

ALUT, organized by the Algarve Trail Running (non-profit association), «is a unique sporting event in Portugal in the form of trail running, which aims to make the region's potentialities known to the world, particularly in its more interiors, for the practice of sport, also disclosing its culture and diversity”, which will take place between the 26th and 29th of November.

The race starts in the municipality of Alcoutim and ends in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, «in a total route of over 300 kilometers, mostly made by Via Algarviana, and with a 72-hour time limit for its conclusion. The passage through the municipality of Lagos, where a “living base” (support base) will be installed, is expected to take place between 19:00 pm on 27/11 and 4:00 am on 28/11».

The Câmara de Lagos will contribute 2 euros to the realization of ALUT.

«Both events will have a safety plan with hygiene and safety measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19, respecting all the rules defined by the General Health Directorate applicable», concluded the City Council of Lagos.
