Quarteira helps “TransformMAR” plastic into social support

A project that combines an environmental component with social action has reached the bathing area of the municipality of Loulé

Quarteira is one of 15 places where holidaymakers are challenged to collect plastic for “TransforMAR” in support of the António Aleixo Foundation.

The Calçadão Nascente de Quarteira is one of the summer resorts from North to South of the country where the “TransforMAR” project will arrive, an initiative “aimed at raising awareness of the importance of good environmental behavior on beaches and the principles of the circular economy” .

For two months, equipment for depositing plastic and metal materials produced by vacationers will be installed at the site. And since it is intended to promote good collective practices, the said deposit also has an explanation of the new beach signage – “traffic lights” – created with the aim of reducing the contagion by the new coronavirus», according to the City Council of Loulé.

This nationwide project combines the environmental with the social component, «to support the most fragile communities from the socio-economic point of view, affected by this public health crisis».
In this way, the plastic that is collected will be transformed into monetary donations for a local IPSS in the beach councils where “TransforMAR” is present, «showing that “plastic is of value!”».

In the case of Loulé, the IPSS chosen was the António Aleixo Foundation.

«Another new feature this year is the participation of Brigada do Mar, a key partner that will allow to extend the duration of the project, contributing to the cleaning of beaches, and other non-concessioned areas, outside the bathing season, ensuring the collection of all types waste throughout the year”, added the municipality.

«This is another action that we are happy to be associated with, as it fits into our Municipal Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change. We know that about 90% of the garbage found on the beaches of the Algarve is plastic produced, in large part, by those who frequent these bathing areas during the summer season, with a negative impact on the environment and jeopardizing the survival of marine species », framed Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé.

On the other hand, the mayor also highlights the social support component that this year comes together with the project, "at a particularly difficult time for families."

The “TransforMAR” project was born from a partnership between Lidl Portugal and Electrão, and has several partners, including the Municipality of Loulé.
