The Ciência Viva Summer Internships will take place between the 13th of July and the 11th of September, with a minimum duration of 15 days, but may extend up to a month. Each student will be awarded a subsidy with a maximum value of 400 euros.

This Ciência Viva initiative has more than 40 internships in 18 scientific institutions, with a total of 138 vacancies. More information: http://www.cienciaviva.pt/ocjf/

At the University of Algarve, for example, CCMAR also has vacancies for three internships, which can be seen by clicking here.

These Ciência Viva Summer Internships are presented as «a unique opportunity for secondary and professional education students to have direct contact with the work carried out in research centers and companies with R&D (research and development activities)».

In a real work context and through the acquisition of scientific reasoning skills, participants will prepare themselves for the future challenges of the professional world.

Faro · University of Algarve – Algarve Sea Science Center – CCMAR
"New anti-inflammatory drugs of marine origin for therapeutic and cosmetic application"
July 15th to August 7th
Students will participate in studies performed on epidermal cells (keratinocytes), which aim to assess the anti-inflammatory activity of microalgae extracts in order to determine their therapeutic/cosmetic potential.

Lisbon · Institute of Social Sciences – ICS
“The Sustainable Development Goals through the lens of the social sciences”
10 to August 14
Young people will work on projects that ICS has ongoing on SDGs, research and analyze data, do fieldwork on the topic and try out the available tools, such as a game inspired by this theme.

Porto · Institute for Research and Innovation in Health – I3S
"Fluorescent Bacteria"
July 13th to July 24th
Students will be integrated into the Open Laboratory team – Ipatimup/i3S. The objective of the internship is to develop the basic techniques of Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering and Microbiology such as the production and maintenance of culture media for microorganisms, bacterial culture, bacterial transformation using plasmids, manipulation of microorganisms, protein extraction, observation, collection results and their interpretation.

Porto · Interdisciplinary Center for Marine and Environmental Research – CIIMAR
“Dolphin observation in Foz do Douro”
July 13th to August 13th
In this stage, all participants will be integrated into a program for monitoring and observing cetaceans, specifically dolphins in the coastal area of ​​Northern Portugal, from land. Students will have as tasks the observation and organization of data related to the photographic record, behavior, presence of fishing boats or meteorological data with influence on the species observed in the mouth of the Douro River.

"Microbiological Analysis and Antibiotic Susceptibility Profile of River and Bivalve Waters: Environmental Impact"
July 15th to August 15th
This project includes the observation of biological samples of different species of freshwater bivalves, the analysis of the quality of water from tributaries of the Douro River and contact with some methods of collection and microbiological analysis.

This Technological Leaders of the Future Program is focused on developing and valuing new solutions with a positive impact on sustainability and quality of life on the planet. Throughout the internship process, soft leadership, management and communication skills will also be learned.

Pampilhosa da Serra · Telecommunications Institute – IT – Aveiro
“Cyber-Cosmos – the sky at a click away”
July 29th to August 15th
The student will work on the configuration of the eVscope (telescope with digital sensor), which will be managed from a smartphone based on the GPS coordinates and the internal star map of this equipment. It will also measure natural observation conditions and light pollution.
