Alcoutim discussed "Desertification and Territories"

O Competence Center in the Fight Against Desertification, based in Alcoutim, promoted, last Friday, July 17th, the workshop “Desertification and Territories: state of the art”. 

The initiative took place at 10:30 am at the Salão Nobre of the Municipality of Alcoutim, but it was also possible to follow it online.

In total, around 100 people participated, divided between the two modalities (online and in person).

The workshop began with a few words of welcome by Osvaldo dos Santos Gonçalves, president of the Alcoutim Chamber, followed by interventions by Lúcio do Rosário, former National Focal Point of the Convention to Debate on Desertification, on major features of desertification in Portugal in the last half century, and of Fernando Oliveira Baptista, retired Full Professor at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, who spoke of depopulation, desertification and local development.

The closing session was held by Pedro Valadas Monteiro, regional director of the Algarve Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries.

The Competence Center in the Fight Against Desertification is a forum for sharing and articulating knowledge, which brings together agents of research, training, capacity building, dissemination and transfer of knowledge, with economic agents and relevant public administration bodies, enhancing their cooperation, at national and international level, with a view to promoting the development and sustainability of the fight against desertification.
