University of Algarve «admits the possibility» of increasing places in the Master's in Medicine

Government says Portugal needs more doctors

The University of Algarve «admits the possibility» of increasing the vacancies in the Integrated Master's Degree in Medicine (MIM), despite the guiding order that was published on June 15th, in Diário da República, which provides for a minimum increase of 15% in vacancies in Medicine, does not cover the course offered by the Algarve academy, since there is a special competition for this.

Paulo Águas, rector of the University of Algarve, speaking to the Sul Informação, reinforced that, for now, this is just a possibility and that the Government's guiding diploma does not apply in the case of the MIM.

«The publication of the notice for recruitment was made in December and the candidate selection process is still in progress. We are not talking here about a degree course, with a national competition, for 12th grade students. We are talking about a Masters, with a different selection process, which recruits graduates».

In this recruitment notice, the number of vacancies foreseen is 48, «a value equal to that of previous years», he framed.

Nevertheless, if there is this intention, the number of vacancies in the MIM can already be increased for the next school year, according to Isabel Palmeirim, director of the Integrated Masters in Medicine.

“There would be that possibility, the opposite is that it could not happen. What would happen is that the "cut line" would go down," he told the Sul Informação.

O desire to increase the number of doctors trained by the Integrated Masters in Medicine at the University of Algarve has already been expressed on more than one occasion by Manuel Heitor, Minister of Science and Higher Education.

«It has already announced this intention and was very impressed with the work that has been developed by the Integrated Masters in Medicine», recalled Isabel Palmeirim.

The government official, last Wednesday, once again mentioned the University of the Algarve, in statements to Antena 1, in response to the objection of the Council of Medical Schools to the increase in the number of vacancies in the national competition for Medicine.

Manuel Heitor, who believes that Portugal needs more doctors, stressed that "there are areas that can be greatly strengthened, such as Biomedical Sciences in the Algarve".

However, in relation to the number of places for Licentiate courses, covered by the national competition, which include Nursing or Biomedical Sciences, no decision has yet been taken, according to Paulo Águas.

«This process is in progress, together with the organic units. The Rectory has already requested proposals for the number of vacancies in each of the units and we are going to have a meeting on June 30th. Let's analyze our training offer and let's see how we are going to “assemble the puzzle”», concluded the dean.
