Child labor may see first increase in 20 years

Today marks the World Day Against Child Labor

Unemployment and the crisis caused by the measures taken to stop the new coronavirus, as well as the closing of schools, could lead to an increase in child labor, according to a warning from the International Labor Organization and UNICEF.

In the last 20 years, there have been 94 million fewer children who are victims of child labor. But every effort to combat the scourge may be at stake due to the crisis caused by the epidemic and by the measures that governments have adopted to stop the advance of the new coronavirus.

The alert comes from the International Labor Organization (ILO) and UNICEF-United Nations Children's Fund and was made as part of the World Day Against Child Labour, which is celebrated this Friday, June 12th.
