With masks and safety distance, the workers fought in Faro

“There are families already having a bad time. It was necessary to go out on the street to denounce all this and say that we are here to fight for workers' rights”

This 1st of May, in the traditional celebrations of the CGTP, in Faro, intervention music came from the speakers, but also calls for the approximately 100 people present to always maintain a safe distance.

The Union of Unions of Algarve promised and delivered. More than two meters away from each other and equipped with masks and gloves, a hundred union members marked Workers' Day at the Forum Algarve roundabout.

“It was extremely important to be here today, not only because it celebrates 130 years of May 1st, but because of the harassment that Algarve workers have been subjected to,” António Goulart, from União de Sindicatos do Algarve, told reporters.

According to this official, in addition to the unemployed, there are "thousands of lay-off workers" and "hundreds with wage arrears."

Basically, the workers are, in António Goulart's opinion, being “brutally attacked”.

Although there is still no data on workers in lay off, this will be a “very high” number, he guaranteed.

«The patronage of the region wants the extension of lay-off until the end of the year, in other words: they want workers for many months with reduced wages», denounced António Goulart.

“Hotel workers have very low salaries and will be left with salaries of 635 euros, in a very difficult situation. Covid-19 hadn't arrived yet and we already had bosses firing workers in the trial period, many of them don't have unemployment benefits», he said.

In this equation, the Algarve has «the particularity of the unemployment has risen by more than 40%».

“There are families already having a bad time. It was necessary to go out into the street to denounce all this and say that we are here to fight for the rights of workers, so that the drama we are going through is not also from a social point of view», he concluded.
