UAlg integrates international ranking that assesses contribution to Sustainable Development

Universidade do Algarve was ranked 201-300 among more than 850 institutions worldwide

The University of Algarve (UAlg) integrates for the first time the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, which assesses, at a global level, the performance and contribution of universities to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. UAlg was ranked 201-300 in the overall ranking of THE Impact Rankings, consisting of 766 HEIs, from 85 countries, which met the inclusion requirements.

As the University of Algarve explains, «in this second edition, the ranking counts data for all 17 ODS, unlike the first edition in which only 11 ODS were included. Each objective has a number of specific metrics associated with it, which measure the impact of HEIs towards achieving this SDG”.

Universities can submit data for as many SDGs as they wish, but to be included in the global ranking the requirements are to submit data for a minimum of 4 SDGs. , is required. More than 17 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from 850 countries submitted information for this ranking».

UAlg was evaluated in 11 of the 17 ODS, having obtained an overall rating of 74,1 out of 100.

For this classification, the three SDGs where UAlg obtained the best classification were taken into account. The Academy stood out in SDG 1 – Eradication of poverty (64,9), ranking 69th out of 372 HEIs that showed evidence of contributions to this goal; SDG 4 – Quality education (80,5) rank 24 out of 676 HEIs, SDG 5 – Gender equality (61) rank 101-200 out of 547 HEIs and SDG 17 – Partnership for the implementation of objectives (68,2); position 301-300 in 806 IES.

In this ranking, which evaluates universities by the way they contribute to society, institutions are evaluated taking into account three indicators: research, which produces knowledge to help solve the world's problems, administration, which must manage resources well. and direct action, that is, the way the university acts in society.

Regarding the SDGs in which UAlg stood out, the SDG 1 – Eradication of poverty measures the research of HEIs on this theme, as well as their support to underprivileged students, citizens and local community.

SDG 4 – Quality education measures the HEI's contribution to learning at the level of initial training and throughout life and its commitment to inclusive education, as well as its contribution to research in education.

SDG 5 – Gender Equality measures HEI research on this topic, as well as their policies for gender equality and their commitment to recruiting and promoting women.

The inclusion in this ranking and the results obtained are, stresses the University of Algarve, «a great achievement, because it is recognized as a pioneer at a global level, demonstrating its commitment not only to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals through teaching, research and transfer. of knowledge, but also to incorporate these objectives in the main guidelines of the Institution».
