HPA Group has already performed 10 screenings and 10 admissions because of Covid-19

Of the people screened, about 6% revealed to be suspected cases

The HPA Saúde Group has already carried out 10 screenings at its units in the Algarve alone, while at the Hospital de São Gonçalo, in Lagos, 10 admissions have already been made due to Covid-19.

It was on March 9 that the HPA Group “began to reorganize and restructure its services, with a view to adapting to the extreme demands of the pandemic caused by Covid-19”.

Since that time, "not a single day has gone by where decisions have not been taken in order to keep the organization prepared in terms of safety and security".

Thus, the HPA Group created contingency plans in all units, set up triage stations, opened circuits for Covid patients and Non-Covid patients, restructured an entire hospital to allocate infected patients and made available a Drive-Thru for the collection and analysis of tests to the new coronavirus.

«Since the 17th of March, no one has entered an HPA unit who is not evaluated with the epidemiological questionnaire and temperature measurement. Suspected cases".

These situations, reveals the HPA Group in a press release, « manifested themselves predominantly in women, and the signs and symptoms have been changing; if in the first few days the patients manifested mainly cough and fever, in this last week the presence of respiratory difficulties has also been observed».

A clinical source from the HPA warns of the fact that “chronic respiratory and cardiovascular patients, among others, are neglecting to monitor their health; more severely ill patients are coming to us who, looking like suspicious Covid cases, are actually decompensated patients of their chronic illnesses. This fact has already been warned by several entities, and it may have serious and irreversible repercussions in some situations».

As for the Covid-19 admissions at the Hospital de São Gonçalo, the majority remained under treatment and surveillance in the ward, and it was only necessary to resort to intensive care in one situation.

In parallel, the activity was maintained with regard to urgent care and surgeries, as well as monitoring the treatment of cancer patients and the performance of deliveries.

These last two situations showed an increase in activity, with the number of births almost doubling in relation to the homologous period, reaching around a hundred.

Although face-to-face consultation was always possible, the Group also activated the feasibility of teleconsultation for most specialties.

In turn, the Drive-Thru in Sines, whose collection and performance of tests is the responsibility of the Sines Diagnostics Clinic – CLÍDIS –, the largest unit of the HPA Group in coastal Alentejo, has already tested more than 500 people, whose positive result occurred in about 5%.

The Management of the HPA Saúde Group ends by thanking and congratulating «the professionalism of its employees, whose commitment and dedication have been formidable, allowing the regular monitoring of all those who use HPA units for safety and protection and, above all, ensuring that so far they do not there are no infected professionals».
