Covid-19: About 30% of those infected contracted the virus at home

Minister provided information at the daily press conference to update information on the Covid-19 pandemic

About 30% of a sample of almost 3000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the country contracted the virus at home and 25% in collective institutions, announced today the Minister of Health, Marta Temido.

"In about 30% of the cases where transmission was identified, it occurred in the place of residence," said the minister at the daily press conference to update information on the Covid-19 pandemic.

The data refer to an analysis of the Directorate-General of Health with a sample of 2.958 confirmed cases between the 18th and 24th of April in the country, which will now be regularly disclosed and shared.

For the minister, these data show that one has to be aware that those who are at home [and infected] continue to need special care”.

From the analysis carried out, it was also identified that 25% of the cases corresponded to situations of outbreaks in collective institutions, such as homes, private social solidarity institutions, hostels or companies.

The Minister of Health also stressed that 9% of confirmed cases in this sample referred to cases of social transmission, from contacts with friends and family who did not live in her residence.

Faced with this information, Marta Temido once again appealed “that no one, under any circumstances, lowers the measures to prevent the transmission of infection”.

The analysis shows "that the effort that has been developed has to be continued", being necessary to "continue to guarantee the measures" that have been applied, he argued.

Of the 2.958 confirmed cases included in the analysis, 44% had information on the type of transmission.
