Algarvian dog is vice-champion of Portugal in tracking, obedience and canine protection

Canine sport modality tests dogs and their handlers in a demanding way in three disciplines: tracking, obedience and protection

João Paulino and his boxer Echo von der Konigswiese, were crowned vice-champions of Portugal in PGI (tracking, obedience and dog protection disciplines), in a competition that took place at the end of February, in Loulé.

In 20 years, this is the first time that a Boxer dog participates in this complex competition, automatically qualifying to represent Portugal in the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) Inter-Breed World Championship to be held in September, in the Netherlands.
«We worked hard in the last four years to achieve this result», reveals João Paulino, national IGP vice-champion together with his boxer Echo von der Konigswiese, and responsible for the Iron Dog Algarve canine training school in Quarteira.

«Being national runner-up, in 2020, with a dog of this breed, having surpassed the performance of other examples of the Belgian Shepherd and German Shepherd breeds, is a fact that should fill the Algarve, lovers of the breed, with pride, and that, at the same time, it encourages us to continue to improve our future performance», reveals Paulino.

«We had the opportunity to host the most important event of the year in this sport in the Algarve and, obviously, this was also an important achievement for the development of the sport in the region, which we have been trying to promote, year after year. It was great to compete alongside the best in Portugal, to stand on the podium in our region, and celebrate with our supporters», he explains.



With this result, the pair is automatically qualified to represent Portugal in the FCI World Championship, to be held from 9 to 13 September, in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.

This will be the first time that a Boxer dog represents Portugal in an interbreed World Cup.

In this twentieth edition of the Portuguese IGP Cup, organized for the first time in 20 years in the south of the country, 13 entries from all over the country participated, one of the biggest adhesions in terms of competitors in recent years.

The event also attracted a lot of public, who had the opportunity to see the track test that took place with the support of Quinta do Mel, located in Olhos de Água, which provided several hectares of open field for this discipline.

The public also watched, on field number 2 of the Estádio Algarve, the tests in the disciplines of Obedience and Protection.

This edition of the IGP Cup of Portugal was crowned national champion and winner of the Cup of Portugal, the Barcelona binomial consisting of Casimiro Costa and the German shepherd dog Smile wolf, with a total of 256 points (out of 300).

In 2nd place was the Algarvian binomial with 228 points, in 3rd place Nuno Santos and Butterfly of Spiritus Lusitanus (Belgian shepherd malinois) with 207 points, and in 4th place Vanessa Cruz with Cloe del Pableras (Belgian Shepherd Malinois) with 182 points.

This modality of canine sport tests dogs and their handlers in a demanding way in three disciplines: tracking, obedience and protection.

This kind of «canine triathlon» is intended to test the mental stability, endurance, courage, physical and mental dexterity, the capacity for olfactory discrimination, willingness to work, as well as the capacity and quality of training of the dog.

The competition was organized by the Clube Português de Canicultura in collaboration with the canine training school Iron Dog Algarve, and had the support of the Loulé City Council and the sponsor Tibi.
