“Lavrar o Mar” is walking with art, thought and renowned guests

Each walk will only have 15 participants

What could be “just” another walk will turn into conversations about journalism, architecture, photography, literature or sociology. They will be “walks to think” because walking also stimulates the mind. Here is the new proposal of “Lavrar o Mar” that will take place on March 21, in Aljezur, and March 28, in Monchique.

The initiative, called “Walks with Art”, is new in the always bold – and different – programming of “Lavrar o Mar”.

«It's a debut that, deep down, comes from the almost daily contact we have with nature. When walking, we have the possibility of talking, addressing themes because nature helps us to think», says, enthusiastically, Giacomo Scalisi to Sul Informação.

Thus were born the “Walks with Art” which, first, will take place in Aljezur. The meeting point will be on the 21st, at 10:30 am, in Vilarinha (Bordeira).

From there, 10 different groups will depart on 10 different tours. The courses, of about three hours, are a surprise. On each walk there will be a guest who will be the guide.

«The group of 15 people, on each walk, will be accompanied and guided by a person who will talk, along the way, about their life path», states Giacomo Scalisi.

The proposals are varied: Alexandra Lucas Coelho, who will speak about journalism as a way of listening to others and understanding the world, Henrique Frazão, visual artist who will address memory, photography, archives or climate change, Hugo Denkel, specialist in food culture, or Joana Bértholo, a writer who will talk about the fact that writing and telling stories is not very different from walking and looking for routes.

João Mariano

But there is more. Photographer João Mariano is another guest, on a walk where he will talk about US Costa Vicentina, as well as director John Romão, Algarve architect Mário Martins, who will speak about the combination of ancestral knowledge combined with current solutions, and Nicolau da Costa, beekeeper, shellfish collector, landscape architect and faithful guardian of Costa Vicentina.

The initiative also has the particularity of having english talks: two routes for foreigners, where guests will speak in English: Maria João Pereira Neto, researcher in History and Sociology, who will talk about these themes, and Nuno Barros, marine biologist, are the guests.

Basically, as Giacomo Scalisi explains, “we are going to walk here not only to get to know the territory, but also as a person”.

«Each one will talk about their theme, in an initiative that combines the interest of the landscapes with the interest of the guests. And all this will happen outside a conference room, but in nature, walking», he adds.

Underlying all of this is a clear idea of “how important it is for man to walk. As through this, one can find a thought that goes into the depth of each one».

In Monchique, it will be no different. On the 28th, from 10:30 am, the meeting point will be at Moinho do Fewchinho (Parque do Barranco dos Pisões).

There will only be seven walks there, but that's not why they will be less interesting. There will be guest guides Joana Craveiro, playwright and stage director at Teatro do Vestido, Gustavo Ciriaco, Brazilian choreographer, who will speak about nature, landscape, thought and movement, and Paulo Pires do Vale, philosopher and commissioner of the National Plan Arts which will address themes related to philosophy, culture, religion and even aesthetics.

Two other guests are sociologist of culture Alix Sarrouy and Joana Gorjão Henriques, a journalist from Público who has been writing about the growing reality of greenhouses in Odemira and Aljezur.

João de Brito, Sandro William Junqueira and Afonso Cruz

Finally, there are two people who promise special walks. They are Afonso Cruz and Sandro William Junqueira, the two writers who have produced the texts for the Medronho saga.

As such, they who already «are a kind of connoisseurs of what the mountain is from a literary point of view», will speak of medronho, alcohol and its influence throughout history, as well as the experiences so typical of the mountain and its people.

For Madalena Victorino, another of the programmers of “Lavrar o Mar”, this initiative manages to bring together a «very diversified and interesting group of guests» who have both people born or resident in the Algarve, as well as others from abroad.

«We are very expectant! I felt like doing all the walks!”, he says, between laughs. But higher values are raised… «I have to stay preparing lunch».

It's just that, all walks, will end with a great lunch of conviviality.

“All the groups will meet to have lunch, talk and share the experiences they have lived”, summarizes Giacomo.

Tickets, just to participate in a walk, cost 10 euros and are already on sale. As each tour will only have 15 participants, it is best to hurry.

“Lavrar o Mar” is a project supported by 365Algarve and CRESCAlgarve2020.
