Take advantage of young people's taste for selfies and use it to bring them closer to heritage. This is the idea behind the project “I photograph myself at the Monuments Aqui Tão Perto”, which was presented this Wednesday, February 19, by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.

This initiative is the first step of the harp project, Regional Heritage Education Program, made known first hand by the Sul Informação, and that it will only be fully operational in the next school year.

«The Harpa intends to make the connection to the schools in the safeguarding of the Heritage. It will be launched in the next school year, but in the meantime, the photography competition “I photograph myself in the Monuments Aqui so Perto” will start, which aims to raise awareness of the built heritage», explained Adriana Freire Nogueira, regional director of Culture to journalists of the Algarve.

The purpose, according to the official, “is that the young people find themselves with the classified heritage, or not. The idea is for them to choose the buildings they understand as heritage. Therefore, if there is a building that they consider important, they should photograph themselves next to the monument and it will be interesting to see what young people see as heritage».

The photos will then be published on the Facebook and will be evaluated by a jury and also by the public. The top three in each category will be awarded.

Bearing in mind that the photos will be shared on social media, “it will have to be the parents' permission. However, only one arm may appear, for example. There may be creativity in that aspect», added Adriana Freire Nogueira.

“I take pictures at the Monuments Aqui Tão Perto” is an activity of the Regional Directorate of Culture in partnership with the Regional Delegation of Education and will have the support of FNAC.

Students from the 2nd and 3rd cycles and also from secondary education can participate. The works can be delivered until the 27th of March, with the public announcement of the winners taking place on the 29th of April.

As for the Harp project, Adriana Freire Nogueira says she can only reveal that “we chose the theme of the Romans. It will have a theme every year and it will be worked on in schools».

Paulo Pires do Vale presented the National Art Plan

These initiatives were presented during a session to publicize the National Arts Plan, which was launched last year by the Government.

Representatives of local authorities, associations and schools were present at this event, which was attended by Paulo Pires do Vale, commissioner of the plan, which aims to promote «social transformation, mobilizing the educational power of arts and heritage in the lives of citizens».
