Ireland's travel industry professionals distinguished the Algarve as “Best Summer Destination 2020” in the 2020 edition of Irish Travel Industry Awards, announced last Friday.

This award recognizes quality in providing international travel services to customers traveling from that market and constitutes a seal of guarantee awarded by the Irish Travel Agents Association.

The Algarve was voted favorite in a list of nominees that included other destinations such as Spain and the Canary Islands, Greece, Italy and Orlando.

“This is another important distinction for our region and will play a strategic role in consolidating the prestige and notoriety that the Algarve brand has built in the Irish market”, says João Fernandes, president of Turismo do Algarve.

"The set of attractions that the region can offer to those who visit it, from the beaches, landscapes of enormous natural beauty, the delights of local cuisine, cultural visits or the practice of various activities such as golf, water sports, Walking or cycling have long been valued by Irish tourists and this interest happily continues to grow. In fact, the Algarve has established itself in this market not only as an ideal holiday destination, but also as an ideal place to get married”, he reveals.

“It should be remembered that this title of Best Summer Destination has been awarded to Portugal consecutively, since 2017, and, therefore, we are obviously proud to be able to contribute, now in our own name, to continue all this recognition that Ireland has given the value of the national tourist offer”, concludes the president.

As one of the main sources of tourists for the Algarve region, Ireland was responsible for the stay of around 245 guests and over 1.320.000 overnight stays in the destination, in 2018.

Last year and until September, there was a 10% growth in the number of guests and 5,4% in the number of overnight stays, compared to the same period of the previous year.

This is the second prize that the Algarve wins in 2020, in a short space of days. Last week, the region was also distinguished with the title of “Best Golf Destination in Continental Europe”, attributed by the readers of the renowned British magazine Today's Golfer, for the fourth consecutive year.
