The artisan Maria João Gomes, who is among the five masters chosen nationwide to integrate the RTP1 program “O artisan” received a vote of praise from the Chamber of São Brás de Alportel.
The distinction was awarded in recognition of the artisan's “dedication, work and merit”, taking into account “his daily work in favor of valuing the traditional art of the Algarve palm enterprise and the territory's natural resources”.
«It was out of curiosity that Maria João Gomes took the first steps in this art that has become a true passion. With a letter from an artisan and creator of the brand “Palmas Douradas”, in 2015, the artisan is currently installed at the Museu do Traje, where she presents her work and holds craft workshops, being an ambassador of the Algarve palm in the world», according to Chamber of São Brás de Alportel.
Maria João Gomes «has several partnerships with designers Portuguese and foreigners in the field of haute couture, as well as representations of their articles in renowned spaces in Portugal and France. He also exports his works to several countries».
In 2019, Maria João Gomes participated in the RTP1 program “O artesão”, broadcast on December 26, «having during her participation taught the entire process of contract work to several candidates. His participation and his teachings contributed to the perpetuation of this traditional art through the future artisans chosen in the program».
