António Lopes, professor at the Higher School of Education and Communication (ESEC) of the University of Algarve, died this Saturday, 14 December, aged 52, from an illness.

In a note published on social networks, ESEC communicated the death of the teacher, who was born in Faro, who occupied the positions of deputy director and member of the technical-scientific council of the school.

António Lopes graduated in Modern Languages ​​and Literatures, English/German variant, from the Faculty of Arts of Lisbon. He had a postgraduate degree in Anglo-American Studies from the same Faculty and a Master's in Anglo-Portuguese Studies, in the specialty of English Literature, by the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He also had a doctorate in English Culture from the same University.

The teacher taught curricular units in English language and culture, English literature, literary studies and cultural studies and was director of English teacher training courses for basic education.

António Lopes was a researcher at CETAPS (FCHS-UNL and FLUP), where he collaborated in several lines of research and was a member of the editorial board of the Revista de Estudos Anglo-Portugueses (indexed at SCOPUS) and Reviewer in several indexed journals.

The professor also participated in European projects, coordinated by the University of Amsterdam, and was the international coordinator of the European project PETALL (Pan-European Task-based Activities for Language Learning) which involves universities and secondary schools in ten European countries.

He was also the representative for Portugal of EUROCALL – European Association for Computer-Assisted Language Learning.

António Lopes' wake is scheduled for this Monday, according to ESEC, but no further details are known about the location and time.
