Minister of Health says there is no shortage of doctors in hospitals in the Algarve

For the minister, what is needed is to "review scales and forms of organization"

Marta Temido, Minister of Health, considered this Friday, December 6, that there is no shortage of doctors at the Hospital and University Center of the Algarve (CHUA).

"I don't think there is a shortage of doctors in the Hospital and University Center of the Algarve or in the Hospitals of the University of Coimbra," said the official, in statements broadcast by Antena 1. Both hospitals have been in the news due to the shortage of professionals.

For the minister, what is needed is “to review scales and forms of organization”.

In the specific case of CHUA, Marta Temido said that "this month's stopovers are complete and that, if necessary and the internal teams feel incapable of doing more extraordinary work, there are alternative teams."

Marta Temido's statements come at a time when the difficulties of the NHS, in the Algarve, are the order of the day. Yesterday, December 5th, the surgical team leaders of the Hospital de Faro they came out publicly refusing to work in the emergency room from 1 January.

Miguel Guimarães, the president of the Medical Association, was also in the Algarve yesterday, expressing "total solidarity" with this attitude of the chiefs of surgery.

Marta Temido, in turn, said that the use of "service providers" is not desirable, but "it is up to us, first hand, to respond to the population's assistance needs."
